There's not a whole lot to look at on a G4 SLQ.
Gold for me, but I'd rather have a $2.50 Indian than the Liberty.

My sentiments exactly.

Although, PCGS Price Guide values the G-4 1916 SLQ $750 higher than the EF-40 1850-D quarter eagle.

Sounds like a dilemma. My first instinct was "no brainer go for the gold" but I started thinking about scarcity and if one day you wanted to re-purchase the coin you had to sell, would it be a easier task to find the quarter eagle Indian head or the SLQ. Even tho the the SLQ is in low grade its retaining a high value for a reason. The Indian head's value is all in its metal content. If gold drops so does this coins value, yes the numismatic value will retain because of it history but it will surly lose some desire value.

Hard call, but I would base my decision on the rarity of the coin and how hard will it be to re-purchase in the future.

My thoughts...

I would go for the SLQ, it is the key in the series and would be expensive to replace in the future. Good luck and either way, you win.

I like the SLQ ,but don't like the G-04 grade . I know nothing about Gold coins but in this case I'll take it , making my Gold coin collection quantity ( 1 ) .

I'd take the gold coin. Love the history of the mint it was minted at. The SLQ is tough for me to get excited about since it is such a low grade.

That's kind of the way I was looking at this. I want to say though that this isn't just a $2.50 Liberty. If it was then the choice would be easier. It has the D mint mark from the Dahlenega mint. Is it easier to replace a 1916 SLQ in good condition CAC or a Dahlenega gold coin in XF-40 with the CAC sticker and which one will be in more demand by collectors in the future?

I would take the gold coin because it's much harder to find.

The SLQ will almost certainly be easier to replace.

I don't have any gold coins in my collection (discounting coins with trace gold content), and both SLQ holes in my 7070 are already filled. And I don't really get the point of collecting key dates (even though I know that, in principle, they are the only coins that hold their value).
Besides, I've wanted to get a Charlotte or Dahlonega mint coin (in any condition) ever since I found out those mints existed; I just quickly realized that I'm extremely unlikely to ever have that kind of money.

So I'm choosing the gold. You weird key date collector people can have the 1916 quarter.

More people dream of owning the SLQ. A solid G-4 is actually quite acceptable. Many collectors might make a run at one of those.

Not an official CCF poll, but it looks like we are about 5 for SLQ vs 18 for the Gold Liberty.
