At what point is a coin considered cleaned? If you pick a coin up out of the mud and wipe your thumb across it so you can see it is a quarter has it been cleaned. You wipe it a couple of more times so you can see the date? You run it under water? You dip it in acetone? You work it over a little with a Q-tip? I know taking it out to the shop and using the wire wheel on my grinder would count as cleaned but are there things you can do to improve the look of a coin that would not count against it if you sent it in to be graded? I picked up an Unc. set of War Nickels the other day and 2 of them have a green spot on the front that I would like to get rid of but don't want to do anything that would devalue the coins.

Everything is cleaning...technically

but there are safe ways (acetone) and unsafe ways (grinder)

IMHO, a coin is considered cleaned once the cleaning process affects the original metal surface. Dirt and organic residue can be removed without affecting the surface, but removing anything that is chemically a part of the coin will also remove some of the coin's original metal.

In a strictly numismatic sense, cleaning is a damaging process that disturbs the metal surface of the coin while conservation only removes surface contaminants without disturbing the metal surface.
