Hey all. I saw this 1857 Three Dollar gold piece selling on ebay for a pretty fair price. I have heard that gold coins are commonly counterfeited though, so I want to be cautious with these. Nothing really stands out to me as to this not being genuine, but I figure it wouldn't hurt to ask for some more experienced members' opinions.

Here is the actual listing, if anyone is curious:

I am not actually planning to buy this. Just curious for opinions.
Rest in Peace

Opinion is that it's too beat to tell much about authenticity. It's value is strictly gold content plus $10-$20 for giggles.

I don't deal with gold coins, but I wouldn't buy a beat up coin like that unless I could see it in my hands first, or if it was a large ebay store.

Nothing screams fake to me, but I certainly don't like the polishing done with an angle grinder.

Don't buy it.

Any evidence to prove that is may be a genuine coin has been very thoroughly rubbed off.

Even if it is of genuine 90% gold, the gold melt value is the highest it can be valued at.

Save up a bit more cash to buy something that will be more satisfying to own.

It looks real enough and is a relatively rare date. Looks like some solder residue on the reverse. It would make a good pocket piece, and fairly priced for what it is, for a lowball collector at F2 or G3.

It's not worth slabbing IMO.

I agree with thq that it looks genuine, is a better date and is possibly an ex-jewelry piece. I wouldn't touch it at that price though. There's less than $200 worth of gold in it (assuming it is a genuine $3 90% gold piece) and it appears heavily worn/damaged.

$3 gold didn't circulate much.
I suspect that the wear is being used to hide the fact that it's a fake.
I don't KNOW that it's a fake but why take chances on something that's virtually uncollectable.
