I just want to see if I'm sorta on track as far as the grading would go... Am I on target if I said this Shield nickel falls somewhere between Good and Fine? The rim is damaged, would that knock it down to Good even if the rest was Fine?

Also... the line across the the vertical line of the number "5"... post mint damage?

A couple more and I'm calling it quits for the day... promise! LOL

Close maybe but I usually look to see what's left of the shield detail, stars and leaves. Becasus almost al fine detail is gone or damaged, it's in the G4-G6 range if that...there a porosity to it, been in the ground so is environmentally damaged as well as circulation damage. Not bad for a 150 yr old workhorse coin! A lot of mine have less details.

Keep plugging away at the learning. The Shield series is an interesting one a lot of folks tend to overlook. Many varieties with the overdates and doubled dies.

Do you have a good reference book on grading?
