North movement MD. Notice MM has identical effect of step shelving, when both effected like this is ALWAYS MD!

The first clue for MD is this: Note the color on your coin above the date? Note how it is just one color there. The contour of those devices were flattened and just show one color. Note on all lower parts of the devices. The color of the contour shows. Light in the centers of the devices, changing to a darker color on the edges of the devices. Color is the first clue.

Also note, the top of the mint mark is also affected the same way. If you see this on the pre 1990 coins that the mint mark and the date is affected the same, the second clue this is Machine Doubling. The die is prepared first, then the mint mark is added to the die later on. So if you coin shows both affected the same, the coin was altered after the strike.
