I have been wanting to get a metal detector for a long time now and have started doing research again when I came across this video:
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/94034...al_detector/
I had to laugh at how easy it was to do and that if I showed my kids they would be making them in a heart beat.

They'll work, but you've got 30 year old technology. Only good where it's never been searched.

.........REMEMBER..........You get what you pay for!.....If you really think that this homemade detector will outperform a $400 factory made detector.............You really need to at least rent a detector and see what you are missing out on!...........JOE

..........A newbie to metal detectors really needs to look at the Garrett Ace 250 for a little over $200.00..........one gets quite a lot!..............You can find detectors used for a lot less but also have to deal with less than honest people, detector problems and no warranty. Buy a detector from your local dealer........you will need the support plus you have a place to take the detector if it malfunctions.................Joe

I remember making one about 35 years ago using a old hand held AM radio and a coil of copper wire

You might be a redneck ..... if you use duct tape instead of scotch tape and a solder a coat hanger loop to the antennae so you don't have to crawl around on your hands and knees to find beer can tabs with that.

Almost like something from

I'll second the vote on the Ace 250. We used to sell lots of GTI2500s and while it's still an excellent machine, the Ace 250 is so far superior to most of the competition that people are buying it for considerably less money.

Check out http://metaldetectors.ecrater.com for a couple limited time offers of Ace 250s we just put up.

I think it would be a good project for the kids so be ready to put your hand in your pocket for an ACE 250 when there finish .
When I was into electronics 30 years ago I built a kit detector call an ETI 1500,used it until I brought a Minelab 1700,4 detectors latter and it's the GP series

I'm in the middle of nowhere Central Mexico where you have to import what you need or make it your self...or buy it used.

In the near future I will have a limited opportunity to search a old hacienda where I have been told there are numerous buried coins and other "artifacts" worth finding...

At present, I cannot view that video...can someone share the BASIC principle being described here?
