I'm in central mexico and I know a couple of local guys that have used detectors with success.

I have a few unique opportunities to search some areas that I'm told have a lot of old coins (sighted by an old timer as a child in his parents rancho in the mountains).

+twenty years ago I was given a radio shack detector that I gave away a few years ago. It worked "ok"...but I know what is out there...I have seen the silver from the 1800s and 1700 that has been found...and bought some of them.

I don't know where to start to determine what would be a good detector for my circumstances...but renting one would be idea (not likely here) buying one 2nd had at the junk market (not a good idea) or investing $2-300 in one without getting to test it and just hope i'll use it...which I'm afraid I will not aside from a few outings. (other priorities)

I saw that a detector could be made...but is that even worth pursuing?

Please, some input...Thanks in advance!!

you answered your own question. if you just want it for this one project. chances are which ever model you buy or rent will not serve you well even machines like the ace 250 which I own take practice to learn how to use.

Do you want to start metal detecting as a hobby or just find the supposed treasure and then dump the machine? Metal detecting is a skill learnt over time and relies on the person just as much as the machine. You may find your treasure on your first trip or you may never find it.
what ever you decide I wish you luck in your hunt.

I would like to be able to use the machine for a few outings every now and then. I have other hobbies that I'm a bit more dedicated to like coin collecting. However I did enjoy having the detector back in the day, I just realize that I will not likely be able to give it the commitment that many out there do...

More importantly, the risk of getting a new machine from the US is quite a challenge and expense, I'm sure there are other options out there and would like to hear from people that are more familiar with such situations.

For practical purposes...how risky is getting a used detector?

I have several colleges buy detectors after seeing my finds. Most bought second hand from ebay, Mercardo libre. One lives in CD Del Carmen Campeche. As long as you choose a model that is fairly well know you should be ok.

Garrett have dealers in Mexico as I am sure doe Whites etc. Maybe one of these will have a second hand or ex demo unit.
