After reading several posts here, I still do not know which to purchase. It seems that the top 2 brands people here use are Garret and Whites, but within those two brands people are using 5-7 different models.

So here is what I am looking for:

Purpose: Locate coins / jewlery

Used by: Myself and teenage children

Skill level: Beginner, have never even held one in my hands.

Budget: $300 - $400

Ok, confuse me somemore.......

I am fairly new to the hobby myself, but for your price range I think you should go with the Minelab X-Terra 30 Pro. it can be purchased here for $349.00
http://www.kellycodetectors.com/min.../minelab.htm and comes with 2 search coils and a lot of other free stuff also.

I have been detecting for a few years and own two Garrett Ace 250s. I feel that they preform in the price range you have budgeted, but go for under $300. Can't beat them in my opinion.

Take the money you save and invest in a vibra probe pinpointer, you will be glad you did.

I have been detecting since the mid 80's and have used most brands and have been asked this question a lot. I agree with some of the others that the Garrett Ace 250 is a very good machine to start out with. It has a lot of good features for the money and is easy to use. I use and like Whites and Fisher the best, but wish I had never sold my old Garrett master hunter 7. It was heavy but I really found a lot of coins with it. Whites sells the most detectors, then I am not sure if it would be Garrett or Fisher. Also some of the Tesoro machines are very good. But for price and features the ACE 250 is hard to beat.
