Just one of the dozens of Chinese Counterfeit
sites that sell these replica Morgans.
It seems that as soon as they are reported on
the USA Counterfeit Forum and removed, they
pop up again under a different seller name.

I keep finding myself wondering why nothing is done about the counterfeit coins coming in from overseas. Is it not a crime? Is it not worth the authorities time or effort? I would imagine it is pretty easy to find who and where these are made. Many are made as "replicas" but not marked. Is it differing laws from country to country? To my understanding, none of these coins have ever been de-monetized.

What exactly is supposed to be done? It's not a crime in their countries of origin and US law has no meaning there.

Also in the grand scheme of customs duties fake coins wouldn't even crack the top 10 and probably not even the top 20 most important things they're trying to stop.

US customs has made a point of combatting counterfeit items from certain manufacturers. I was just wondering why I've never heard about any attempts in the coin area. Maybe it has happened, I don't know.

The burden is on the collector for sure, but we're talking about counterfeiting US money. If there were counterfeit $20s coming from these places I imagine Customs would be all over it. Smaller target market for fake Morgans but the idea is the same.

I'll bet this has been discussed ad nauseum here and elsewhere. Just thinking about it.

They have, most in brand name things where the fakes are a big threat to the viability of a brand. The other consumer good fakes dwarf numismatic ones in terms of value.

Really though the biggest problem is they would have to have coin experts on the staff that opened every coin package to check it. It's impractical and too expensive for them to do that or to send every coin import to PCGS first. Honestly about the only practical way to stop them would be to just ban all coins entirely which I don't think anyone wants that

Not really for collector coins vs bills. You are right that fake bills do get the vast majority of the attention, but that's because they're used in commerce. Fake collector coins are no threat to the day to day economics of the country where as enough fake bills could cause a loss of confidence in them.

Opinion only, but if one dollar or one agent hour were spent on fake coins before every ounce of illicit drugs were stopped - THAT - I would consider an injustice.
