CoinWorld - The only certified red example of a 1943 Lincoln bronze cent was never previously offered for sale but has reportedly just been purchased by an East Coast collector for a price in excess of $1 million.

The coin, purchased by private treaty in 2018, is graded Mint State 63 Red by Professional Coin Grading Service and stickered by Certified Acceptance Corp. with a green label as being superior for the grade.

One of roughly 15 examples known of the wrong planchet error, the coin is now the third example of the error now held in what is being called The Dazzling Red Collection.

Am I the only one who thinks that coin looks fishy? The coincidence of the wrong planchet being used, which should have by all guesses been in the earliest run of coining (based on the accepted theory of leftover 1942 planchet in the bin), being Struck Through Grease in several places, kind of missing a rim (seems to MAD), and being plagued with nasty?
I am not saying that I know better then PCGS, but that coin sets off alarm bells in my head.

A million dollars might be better spent.

AU-58 barely makes red (although I'd rather call it red brown) and horribly spotted. Being a 43 copper is impressive, but it is not an attractive coin. I'd rather have a lower grade more attractive one.

If that gets a CAC sticker, then CAC stickers are worthless. Just my 2 cents, which apparently leaves me $999,999.98 short.
Rest in Peace

Here is what has bothered me for years. The grades are supposed to be set in stone (or metal ), yet time after time I see coins that are graded really high even though they look like they had the crap beat out of them. It reminds me of when this kid used to tell me "oh well because such and such coin is so old, I grade it as higher because of how old it is"...NO that is not how the grades are supposed to work. MS 63 should be mint state 63 for that coin, no matter what mistake happened. They are saying basically "Well, even though it looks like a metal turd, it was made wrong and looks like this because of that". At least most of the ones this seems to be the case of are stuff where the coin CAN'T look perfect due to different amounts of metal, but there really isn't that excuse here is there? A cent was made out of a cent blank. Not a dime, which would not have enough metal and not fill it out all the way, but another cent. This coin should look AMAZING to be graded MS63. This just ensures I will never send a coin to be graded because they have obviously lost it.

Fully concur on the lack of eye appeal for this coin.

It's possible (I'm just suggesting) that the coin gained all those spots while in the PCGS holder ... that has happened before ... and was in fact 'Red' when certified.

I also believe that strike quality is not considered by the TPG to be detrimental to grade until you get above MS65 or so .... which could account for the grease filled areas.

I'm not defending the PCGS assigned grade ... simply offering a counterpoint for what to my eye is an ugly "Red-Brown" coin in current appearance.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.art
