OTTAWA —
Quote:
The Royal Canadian Mint is suing its Australian counterpart over the way it prints red poppies on its commemorative Remembrance Day coins.

Documents filed in Australia's Federal Court in December allege The Royal Australian Mint used without permission a printing method patented by the Canadian mint — which is now demanding that Australia's 500,000 commemorative $2 coins, in circulation since 2012, either be turned over to them or "destroy(ed) under supervision."

"It has become necessary for us to institute infringement proceedings to protect and preserve our intellectual property rights," Canadian mint spokesman Alex Reeves said in a statement to the National Post Wednesday. ....

What Cdn specific patent is being referred to is a little confusing because of the photo of the 2015 quarter in the article. It seems it might be the other design which first appeared on Cdn quarters beginning in 2004, then 2008, 2010....

That's business for you.
Ho hum.

Fortunately for me, I don't collect modern mint product,
except for what I pull out of circulation at face value.

Why don't they sue China for making counterfeits? Demand all of them be turned over to Canada!

According to the article, RCM demands that Australia retrieve and turn over all the circulated $2 from 2012.

Keep an eye out for any of them and do the right thing!

Yeah, right. That is never going to happen. What about later $2 coins that appear to have the same type of coloring?

I dunno why but I find this hysterical. Someone call the Queen to make the children stop fighting.

In a more serious response the RAM will likely have to pay a royalty, confiscating and destroying every last coin just isn't going to happen

You never know, the RAM might find a way of successfully defending the case.

The lawyers win again.

Since the taxpayers are the stakeholders in the mints of their respective countries, they are who will pay in the end.

By allowing the offending coin to be minted with her effigy on the front, is the Queen also liable for the copyright infringement?...

(Not a serious question, but it does bother me that her official image is on every weird gimmicky coin of the realm.)
