What you have there is an environmentally impacted coin. Exposure to the elements will do things to a coins appearance. Some of us collect specimens like that for an environmentally damaged nickel collection. I think nickelsearcher has the most complete set that I know of. No premium for these coins though. In fact, collectors normally shy away from damaged (environmentally or otherwise). That said, the contrast between the bared metal and the staining can be attractive, thus why a few of us have the interest in piecing together an environmentally damaged (impacted) nickel set. Collect what you want...and like. Regarding Error Coin and Variety Coin hunting, there are a number of sites to visit on the internet that can help you learn what to look for and what to keep. Stick around the forums and don't forget to use the Search tool to look things up (e.g. Doubled die coins, RPMs, MAD die strikes). Have fun exploring and asking questions!

This nickel certainly did it's duty, but I'm not seeing anything that would indicate a mint error.
The golden color beneath the dark color is also toning. Not an indication of a different metal.

Thank you all for your information. I do troll and am subscribed to various channels, blogs, and web pages daily. I'm very interested in learning how to spot whats happened to coins over time and whats error. I try not to look too hard or over examine a coin. But.... Well thanks for the info guys.

to the CCF! If you want to easily use the smileys, they can be accessed through the "switch to full reply" button below the short reply dialogue box. Or if you prefer, you can memorize some of the more commonly used ones. In the following examples, replace all parentheses with square brackets. (w) = (:D) = (umm) = (gb) = (8D) =
