Hi folks,

I'm new to the forums and glad to be here.

I've been hunting for a Louis XVIII 5 Francs silver piece (KM# 702.1) for several months, and finally found one for a reasonable price.

This is my question: is it authentic? I know this example has excessive surface scratches and was improperly cleaned, likely with chemicals. This resulted in a poor surface, but it's still a nice example of a difficult year to come by.

The diameter and weight are correct. The edge lettering is correct. The ONLY issue I've found is that its ping test sounds a little "off." When I use a cull Peace dollar to lightly tap the rim of the 5 Francs coin, the sound is a little dull. It's not as clear and high-pitched as other silver coinage. Is that enough of an issue to call the authenticity into question?

It was purchased off ebay (I know, I know) from a dealer with great feedback and no issues that I know of. Moreover, I've never seen a fake coin of this year/mint, but this doesn't mean they don't exist.

Thanks folks! I really appreciate the help.

Cool coin, of dimensions/weight/edge lettering are all good I'd be inclined to think it's real. Here is a page with some other tests, some of which I've never heard of, that may be of use.

As a quick check as long as the weight and edge is correct you should be fine and the fact you bought it from a non-China source & good feedback dealer. Modern Chinese coins use the die transfer process and you will generally see raised bumps in the field or small lumps of metal from this MODERN casting process. Metal alloys commonly used by Chinese counterfeiters are Fe/Ni, German SIlver and Debased silver. These all pitch LOWER than silver at 90%.
