Hello everyone!

This is a 10 Cash coin, struck in brass, from the Kiangsi Province. It is a milled coin. I feel this coin is a fake coin, although I bought it from a reputable dealer in Hong Kong. Struck in brass, dimensions and weight are fine. Characters seems to be not mushy.

Could not use Krause, therefore had to use Zhou and Li for identification. Number is KSI-24

Thank you for all your help! Will have some more Asian silver and copper coins coming up!

I don't remember seeing a milled copper Chinese coin. I can see your concern.

The two examples I have are as follow:

First coin is a rotated die error. I believe my second example may be questionable as well. Bought it a while back so I cannot recall where it come from.

Thank you gxseries! You are the best! I feel like this coin is still a quite questionable coin. Scott Semans, has a specimen in his collection.

There are examples where I have the same type of coin in both copper and brass. This is a well known issue during the history of Chinese coinage. During the early issues - copper coins are meant to be struck in high copper content. But as times got tough, i.e civil war, tough economy, rising copper prices, etc - it is not surprising that coins were struck in lower copper content especially with provinces that were not well off. This has also been observed in early Chinese cast coinage.

I am certain that in some Chinese catalog, they have it noted as 'red copper' and 'yellow copper'.

Appears to match Krause 150.5 circa 1902. Apparently modern minting equipment was introduced there in 1901.

Hope this helps.

Thank you! PatAR and Gxseries. I was dumbfounded by no catalog attribution by Krause. But it makes sense since it does not specialize in Milled cash of China.

Chinese is NOT my area at all... but on the topic of bogus Kiang-si (or Kiang-see) 10 Cash, this happened to cross my path a few months back:

Looked interesting from a distance, but I didn't like it from the full pics so I dug a bit. Examine focal points vs. this thread (where the OP had the correct instinct but that one responder had his head in the sand):

And of course, if this guy is selling it...

Yes. Best 666 Is a fake coin seller on ebay. Selling pattern Hunan Province cash and some UNC Chinese silver. Fake fake fake! Norman Gorny actually did a report on him on his website. Refer to him.

Thank you!
