I'm considering bidding on this coin. While this ebay seller has received mixed feedback on CCF, they have 99.8% positive feedback on ebay. Clearly they have some hi-tech lighting/photo techniques but nonetheless the details look XF to me. I'm looking for original (i.e., not cleaned) specimens. Just hoping others can provide any opinions before I need to pull the trigger on a bid. Thank you!  *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

I don't see any obvious issues. Xf..yeah. I think if I were buying it I would stick to VF35 to get the price down and if I were selling it in my shop I would put it as XF45 and sell it for 40 money.

Knowing how GSC does their photographs, I'd expect the surfaces to look much lighter in person.

I agree, a solid XF 40.
Better photographs shouldn't elevate the price.

Thanks everyone who responded. I won this coin at $77 (+$3.25)!! jmkendall - great insight on considering pricing based on VF35. For this coin and others in this series (and maybe other series), the VF/XF threshold is significant. Meaning there is a big jump in price once you hit the XF tier. Based on my research, current market value for an unslabbed VF35 should be around $80. This is based on both the current blue book (as I'm not a graysheet subscriber) and PCGS auction sale results (minus about $25 to account for slabbing fees). I also saw two other very very similar coins were sold by this same seller on Jan 1 and last Oct 29 for $102.50 and $94, respectively. These are shown below (Jan coin on top, Oct coin on bottom). So I feel this coin was a good value at the price I paid. I just hope I'm still pleased once I view the coin in hand (this speaks to your comment Kefiroth!) I'm planning to put this in a page 1 Danso (1916-1931) that I'm building of well matched XF-ish grade mercs. I really like this earlier pre-1933 series (not even bothering w/ the late date mercs), and focusing on the keys/semi-keys first. Additional insights from seasoned merc collectors are much appreciated! (macmercury, merclover, and others!).

Let us know how this purchase works out for you. Despite GSC's less than stellar reputation people do occasionally get good deals through them. GSC is well known as a shill bidder so former auction resuklts for coins they have sold mean next to nothing.

BH1964 - wow, shill bidding on ebay seems a no win situation! if they shill bidded those other coins, we should expect to see them back up for sale soon...but then again they'd have to hold on to them for months or longer to try and hide this scam behavior. mind if I ask how you happen to come by this information? thanks (caveat emptor!)

My personal Mercury buying habits of late has been the opposite of this... I have been snatching up as many FSB later date Mercs on the cheap as I can for TWO reasons, first, because I feel the later date FSB Mercs might be much more difficult to locate than collectors realise due to older dies being used over and over, and secondly, because they ain't making them any more.
But, don't tell anyone so I can get them all myself! Les

Not necessarily. The concept of shill bidding involves NOT winning auctions but rather to push the hammer price to higher levels. Tribal knowledge. If you bid to the level you are comfortable paying then shill bidding should be of little concern. As an aspiring numismatist, do not get involved in bidding wars. They are a losing proposition even if you win.

I've also been doing what merclover stated, picking up several of the 1935 and up mercs with FSB in the past 2 months. I have bought 2 coins from this seller in the past, and was happy with both purchases. One was a mint state 1929 SLQ and the other was a FBL 1950 Franklin.

IMHO, I see the coin you bought as a VF-35 , NOT a solid 40. Quote: ... Yes , I agree . Would be buying them myself but I'm using all my money for finishing my WLH collection .
