Can anyone give me a "ballpark" grade? I know nothing about coin grading so I am looking for a starting point. There is still a good bit of original luster which doesn't really show up well in the pics.

think that's a pretty clear cut xf... jaw and cheek well separated. all the details on the reverse are in good shape. There is a bit of wear evident in various places other than the cheek and jaw which precludes it from being AU.

It's EF for sure. The strike looks soft so it's hard to say if it could go AU but there's very little wear.

Nice find!

That's a solid AU, there's virtually no wear on the cheek and the wheats are clean.

I can't help but think that I'm seeing more wear than can be given to an AU coin. Specifically if you follow the line of the jaw through the bottom of the ear into the hair - midway into the hair and proceeding down is that not wear? Were it just the bit of wear on the jaw by the ear I would for sure go with AU...

Were I just to have seen the back of the coin I would have said 58 or possibly a low end MS.

I also didn't think weak strikes were an issue for 1958... I figure this is a good coin to get some pointers on since the difference in value on an XF and AU coin isn't going to break anyone's bank. (or cause hard feelings.)

Thanks guys, it has been instructional for me. I know it is difficult without seeing the actual coin but the discussion has really helped me know what to look for. Can someone post some pics showing the differences you are discussing? It would sure help me see what to look for.

I just put this together the other day because without fail I always tend to undergrade lincolns as compared to others on this board...
