I have searched several hundred rolls of pennies in the last couple of weeks and got mighty curious about copper distribution, wheats, etc. so I did a little experiment. I got customer rolled ,bank rolled and Fed rolled rolls in equal amounts(the tellers at many banks graciously tolerated my requests). I went to big city banks, small town banks and rural banks to get a real mix of rolls. After 300 rolls here are my results: on average I am finding 24.5% copper pennies,1 Wheat penny in every 255 pennies and of the 1982's I find, 77% are weighing out copper.
There is on average about 2 more coppers per roll from customer rolled rolls. It appears(and I didn't do any statistics on this one)that the older dates I was finding were coming from banks in rural areas. Any comments?

Interesting stats. I got two boxes this weekend, one sealed rolls, and one hand wrapped rolls. Although the hand wrapped rolls yielded a lot of coppers and a 11 Wheaties, a lot of rolls were short a few pennies. The sealed brinks box was ALL zinc.sigh! You're doing pretty good finding more than 20% copper. I had a pile of about a two dozen 82's, only 2 were zinc. I found my earliest wheatback which was from 1911! -PP
