The copper plating on the rim-facing sides of the mintmark was split during the strike and exposed the zinc core. In turn, because of the properties of zinc and copper with moisture/oxygen present, zinc rot (corrosion) has begun. It's not that bad on your coin, but will only get worse.
This is a common occurence with copper-plated zinc cents (mid 1982-present).
