I recently pulled this copper from a junk box. At just $3, I thought it to be a bargain. Having found a few NC's over the years, I was cautiously optimistic about this purchase, yet there's no downside, considering the modest price.
The top of a 4 in the date seems to show? Despite heavy obverse damage, the hair/curls are prominent. The reverse, although heavily burnished, shows the full legend and evidences G-VG details.
I'm thinking it may be a Sheldon, S-55. I note the dropped T in STATES. Then too, there's an elevated T in CENTS. There's an extended stem that appears to touch the final A in AMERICA. Other PUPS? Might this reverse have been used on other varieties? Attribution help/thoughts will be much appreciated. Here are some pics ...
Definitely S-55 stage II. The die crack in the obv field below the cap tells me it is either S-54 or 55 and the high A/low T in STATES nails it as S-55.
