Being Canadian I usually camp out on the Canadian side but I was going through some of my foreign coins today and tried getting additional info with no luck. Hoping images are good for judging and hoping one you might help out. So on this date there is a large date/small date variety - which is this? Also a KRITANNIA " error and to my untrained eye it seems this may be one. Grade of coin and possible value as well would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Spink's 2017 catalogue only lists two varieties for the 1856 half farthing: large date and small date. Yours appears to be the small date variety looking at the link above.
Prices are: F VF EF Unc ( in £ )
small date 7 25 125 350 large date 55 150 375 825
Using Rotographic's "Grading British Coins", the obverse wear appears closest to VF judging by the hair and hairbands. The reverse is closer to EF judging by the fact you can still see fur detail on the band of the crown.
My guess would be a high VF, but then there are the marks on her neck which is where my knowledge ends. I would be interested to hear expert opinion on this.

My eye keeps focusing on the patina, do you guys who know the type well think it is natural or has it been painted Pretty sure I am seeing fine " brush " strokes. My apologies aghawk if my question sounds derogatory, it is not intended that way at all

Quote: By UK standards that coin is about VF; it is certainly not EF. The broken B-K is not unusual and is not AFAIK a 'known' variety such as the 1854 E/N variety. You will notice that a number of letters have breaks - a problem with small letters getting clogged. Coin News valuation is about £30 retail.

Thanks for the info - much appreciated. So that works out to about $50CDN retail . . . now to find someone to purchase. I'll try putting this on ebay and see if it gets any love

The problem with it IMO is its a dig find (its been buried ) that has caused the corrosion and colour. This has then been cleaned which does spoil the overall appearence and makes less collectible.
Only my opinion and good luck selling it.
