As soon as I looked at it I noticed the "4" in this 1946 LWC...
After comparing it to the 1942 previously I thought I should post for comments...
The screen shots are not exact, that is hard to approximate...
However, you can clearly see the difference in the 2 section photos...

No big deal - a hit to the 4 during circulation expanded it - after all copper is a soft metal.

Well they are two different years. The digits change each year.

Sometimes the changes are dramatic, sometimes very small, and sometimes not at all. This is normal for the date.

Thanks guys...I knew there were changes but I did not know the digits changed every year.

So the "font" can change during the year?
Due to deterioration or cracks/breaks in the die?
That true for all letters and numbers, other devices?

I would have thought they would try to use the same "font" and design otherwise it would be hard to maintain specs.

See, always learning something on here!
Rest in Peace

Sometimes even within the same year are changes in dies, like the 1974 so called large and small dates, just two different dies used when making the working hubs...speaking of which, some DDO's are caused by two different state working hubs where an older stretched out state is placed over a new state hub, this makes the differences. 1960D is one that comes to mind, a large date over a small date hub was used. Most of the time the basic hubs were used year to year until changes were made.
