Here is another learning experience for me and would love everyone's thoughts and opinions on the following (please no cheating and going to the site). Both of these coins recently sold on ebay, 1 for $199.00 and the other for $305.00. 1 of them is TPG graded and the other is raw. I would like to know, 1. What grade would you give each of these coins? 2. Which coin sold for what price? 3. Did one person get a great deal, did one person pay too much or is the pricing justified? I feel as though one coin is a slight bit higher grade (but very close) but doesn't justify the price difference. I will share what the TPG graded the one coin at in a couple of days.

1st one. Details. Cleaned VF35 maybe 40
2nd is a more original VF35. I'd go with the 2nd one but there are better deals & examples out there for both.

The first coin looks XF. Doesn't look cleaned to me. Maybe AT.
The second looks VF. Also doesn't look cleaned.
Neither would be coins I would consider unless it was at a deep discount.

My educated guess is as follows: 1. I would grade coin 1 EF-40 details. I think it has enhanced images which hide the wear and cleaning. If you look at the wear on the obverse rims, the ticks on the rim, wear on the leg, and foot etc., it just has the look of a low EF. It looks like an old cleaning to me. I think it could be VF-35 but the reverse brings it up. I would grade coin 2 EF-40. It looks more original without the problems of coin 1. 2. I would hope coin 2 sold for the higher price. As I stated coin 1 has issues I think. 3. I don't think anyone got a good deal. Coin 2 isn't a CAC candidate so it's just middle of the road imo.

Coin 1: XF-40, old cleaning. Coin 2: VF-35, more original. I think Coin 1 (raw) sold for $305 and Coin 2 ( TPG) $199. Neither of the buyers got a great deal. You could probably find a better deal for either coin.

I have a feeling they both are VF details.maybe XF on first one. Not a big fan of either one.They both paid too much, unless there is a variety premium here. strike must be considered, I am no expert here!

Both in the 35-40 range. First has unnatural toning/luster that is disturbed in the fields, probably indicating AT at least.
2nd is dull. Neither have strong strikes. Both could be described as average, at best.
Neither remotely close to a $300 value.

EF-40 details (cleaned), VF-35. Agree neither looks like a $300 coin.

And the results are in! 1. The raw coin I would have graded it VF35 to EF40 (possible details) and the TPG coin is VF35. 2. The raw coin sold for $305.00 and the TPG coin sold for $199.00 3. I feel as though the raw coin was on the high side and the TPG coin was a pretty good deal. I don't think either got a great deal but I do believe that the TPG coin got the better deal. I have tried comparing other sold 1870 S Half Dollars in VF to EF range and the price range was around $200-$430+. Thanks for everyone's comments and opinions.
