Hello,
New to coins, but REALLY enjoying learning about them. I was looking at this coin tonight. It can be seen here:

https://www.davidlawrence.com/rare-coin/1403348

It has a high grade— but a line can be seen on the obverse side extending from the "3" past a couple stars.

What is this line? Does it detract from the value of the coin? I've seen them on others as well, and I can't find an explanation. Thank you very much!

It's a die crack and does not detract from the attractiveness or the value of the coin at all. It was created as part of the minting process.
Rest in Peace

While it doesn't necessarily affect grade, it may be an indicator of the die state and how details may look on a coin. That will all depend upon the strike itself as well. That is why grading is only one aspect of studying a coin, eye appeal may well determine it's selling factors.

Some people seek die cracks on coins. I enjoy them personally and they add character to me. Some coins/years are more noted for them.

There is also 1 on reverse at 7 oclock and another at 3 oclock on reverse running across top of the letters and it looks like a spiked head maybe?through the liberty crown and the star above it and another 8 to 9 oclock on both reverse and obverse

I just hope MR. Z doesn't live anywhere near California. I have relatives out there.

Some folks look for die cracks but they almost never increase the value of the coin. However, there will be a lot of newer collectors that will think it's damage.

You were smart enough to ask first, but not everyone is.

It is simple. If it bothers you, don't buy it. If you don't care about die cracks, buy it.

It is a die crack. Should not affect the grade.
