This silver coin weighs 4.53 grams and has a diameter of 16-18 mm. The holder from the previous owner says Afghanistan, and this seems reasonable from the style.

On the bottom of one side is the date, most likely AH 1241 ( = AD 1828), but it could conceivably be AH 1231 =AD 1818.

On the bottom of the other side reads 13 (RY?) or possibly 131 (AH 1131 = AD 1721?).

From the weight it might be a half rupee, though it's a little light (a half rupee should weigh about 5.5-5.8 g).

I haven't been able to find it in Krause or Zeno. Will certainly appreciate any insights.

It's also possible that this could be from another country, perhaps Iran. They seem to have more silver coins in this weight range, though I haven't been able to match up this coin with any Iranian ones in KM or Zeno either. I feel pretty confident about the 1241 AH and RY 13, but not much else.

You will find coins from Herat under Iran and Afghanistan in Krause, depending who was in control at the time it was issued. This one is under Afghanistan.

by the way - date for this one is AH1301 - I have no idea where the AH1241 comes from on the coin but blundered dates seem to be common for these :)

Thank you for pointing out the 1301; I can see now that the 13 is part of 1301. About the 1241 on the other side, you are right, Krause mentions that blundered dates are common for this type of coin. This is in large part what led to my initial difficulty in identifying the coin.
