I hope this is the correct forum. Take a look at this listing, as well as a similar one by this seller. Scroll down to read what he is trying to accomplish.

Very Interesting.
Here's the story for those who don't want to go to the listing.
He apparently bought some "rare" Russian coins from a shady seller and sent them to NGC for grading. They all came back as not encapsulated. He is trying to raise awareness with an ebay listing that will attract people to read his story. He requests that bids be placed in $1 increments to increase the awareness factor. After the listing ends, he will cancel and you will receive nothing.

The way you said it makes a lot more sense than what I read. Weirdest listing I've seen to date. More power to him if that's the case.

Nice of him to do this but too bad he got burned. The vast majority of imperial Russian coins on ebay are ugly, horrible, cast fakes. If you can't discern on pictures, a close inspection of the coin in hand will confirm forgery status.

I purchased a forgery of a Rouble some time ago (paid about $200 for it) with the sole purpose to cause the seller a headache as I was certain he knowingly and willingly sold forgeries (many forgeries sold in his history of sold coins). Upon receipt of the coin I filed a case with ebay. The seller naturally objected and claimed authenticity. Then a detailed email explaining the reasons why this coin was a forgery made him change his position to "oh I didn't know, I'm not an expert" but he wasn't really keen on issuing a refund.

Long story short, after some hassle I got ebay to force a refund because I was able to prove the coin I actually received was not the coin the was sold. There were many different marks, the toning was different, the shape was a bit different, etc. I'm guessing these guys have an assembly line where they just roll out this garbage from. Can you believe this... he didn't even send the correct forgery! The gall!

This is not the first time I've seen. It's a seller's idea to encourage buyers to be aware of counterfeits. But I would be a bit careful when you dare to put in other seller's account - wait till they claim defamation. It gets very ugly from there.

Do you know what the irony is? The Mongolian coins that he is selling - one of the coins is a well known Chinese counterfeit!

What if... people bid and think "oh okay let's just do this and make more people aware of the fakes", and that last one bidder gets unlucky: the seller doesn't cancel the auction and the unsuspecting bidder loses money.

Who knows, with this method maybe the seller could generate more bids and views compared to "vanilla" fakes?

if this is indeed the case, how would ebay deal with it?

Who knows, some buyers might be generous enough to "donate" for his information.

Unless a buyer cries foul - I cannot see how he's violating any rules.
