Hi - I am a newbie, so I'd appreciate any wisdom I can get from all of you!

I inherited this coin from my mom, who got it from an English company, Bradshaw & Darlington, back in the 1970's, I think. It was in a small envelope in a blue plastic folder, and it is caked in green in all its crevices.

I will try to upload pictures. My heartfelt thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions!

I was so worried about getting the upload right that I forgot to ask my questions: Is this green stuff eating my coin up? Should I try VerdiCare? Also, how can I find out if it's really as ancient as the paper says it is? Thanks again!
Rest in Peace

Welcome to the family!

That greenish stuff may be verdigris or "Bronze Disease". Both need to be cleaned off ASAP. Try first a good overnite soaking in pure acetone(not nail polish remover! In well ventilated area), then rinse with distilled water, pat dry. If you can find some Verdi-care, ( ebay) that would help too. Now Bronze disease can be reduced but never fully removed, but its worth it to try to save what you can. Has lasted 2000 years as is...acetone is a start, will not harm your coins.

Thanks for the tip. I ordered some Verdi-Care this morning. Guess I'd better get some acetone, too.

to the community.

Your coin is a Byzantine and is a Class B Anonymous folles Attributed to Romanus III. There does appear to be some damage from bronze disease on the reverse. As long as it is not powdery it's not active. However the should be removed. The best way to do this is to soak the coin in olive oil for a short time, than brush the coin with a soft nylon brush. Than wiping the coin and coating it with REN Wax.
