Hi,

Asking the family for thoughts in the NG 1/2 Real dated 1782.

I won this on ebay for a surprisingly low bid of ~$12. Considering it is an NG which seldom come up, and these usually go crazy at the end. However, this grades AG/G and is the smallest of denominations for the date, but still...

The weirdest thing to me is the date, particularly the 2, but I also know how small these coins are and the numbering got less intricate in the smaller coins. Particularly at a smaller mint like Guatemala.

Anyone have thoughts on authenticity? Bogus 1/2 Real (what's the point?!?!?) or my lucky day and I finally scored my first NG?

You answered your own questions, for the most part. Grade is important; still, this did go cheap for a piece from these years of Guat. Afternoon auction...

Some of those prices over the weekend were rather anomalous for not amazing pieces.

There was a 1782 1 Real that went from about $100 to over $400 in the last 15 seconds. It was rather exhilarating to watch. I was expecting SOMETHING like that to happen here too, and obviously, nada.

Having the largest collection of Counterfeit 1/2R, 1R and 2R's (~145 different varieties) in the world (intentionally collected) check for a counterfeit by observing and performing three things:

1. Its weight compared to regal in KM (Krause/Mishler).
2. Most counterfeits have Plain Edges and medal die turn axis if in off-metal.
3. If debased silver with good regal edges check (1) above.

All these lower denomination Portraits have non-uniform motifs and up and down lettering or improper symmetry.

This appears in good silver alloy.
