Hi everyone,

I've started a collection of world paper money over the past couple years and have acquired two Germany 1000 mark notes from 1923. The basic design is the same on each, but one has a red serial number, and the other has a blue serial number with a star to the right. Does anyone know what the difference is? Any help would be much appreciated!

Edit: A look in the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money 1368-1960, 14th edition (2013) doesn't give any indication that they should be differentiated based on serial number color, only based on watermark and paper color.

I'm going to try to attach images...this is my first time doing this so we'll see how it goes.

Possibly two different presses using the same base plate run? The bills were usually printed up then serial #'s added later. Could it have been two separate facilities of production or just time?

Historically, this was a time of hyper inflation, Weimar's were churning this stuff out by the boatloads. Why Notgeld came into being. This script was worthless before it hit the streets!

Several different printers were used for these notes. There are 6 different color serial numbers: green, black, violet, red, brown and blue.

The Rosenberg catalog has 16 different varieties including combinations of serial number color, number of digits and watermarks.
