Quote: Did you purchase directly from the mint or after-market?
Bought direct from mint. Late 80s early 90s I went a little crazy "investing for the future" with US Mint and Franklin Mint stuff. Ahhh. To be in my early twenties again.
The modern US commemorative program started up in 1982 with the Washington half dollar. In 1986, commemorative coins were still a new product offering for the US Mint and it was still working out how best to sell / distribute them.
So, in 1986, the Mint collaborated with several retail chains for the sale of its Statue of Liberty / Ellis Islands coins. Roughly 3,500 Sears, Bloomingdale's, Montgomery Ward, Service Merchandise and K-mart stores partnered with the Mint.
The commemorative coins were also sold at thousands of local banks and S&Ls.

Wow Thanks for the history lesson Commems! I have this set as well. My uncle gave it to me on my 8th birthday. Even though they are common they are still one my favorite proof sets. I remember the old statue of liberty commercials. It is my understanding that this issue helped to fund the restoration.
Coin Week used to have a series about commemoratives. David Provost had an excellent two part article (part 1 and part 2) about the Statue of Liberty commemorative program.
Yep, my dad bought me this set when I was 14! I picked up the gold back around 2005 before gold went way up. I think that half eagle is still one of the single best designs in the modern commemorative gold series. I also absolutely love the half dollar design; wish it had been minted in silver! You can still pick em up on ebay for as low as $2/ea every now and then.
