I am a newbie & was happy to get this coin for $300, even though it has been lightly cleaned. Which raises a couple of questions, I guess: How much has the coin been devalued by cleaning? And should all cleaned coins just be avoided completely?

The problem with cleaned coins is you will have a harder time selling them if you ever had to. And yes the value will go down but who knows how much. Somebodey else will be along to give you that information.

Collectors develop as does their collectibles, almost always becoming more discriminating as they grow in knowledge and experience.

Hence, problem coins become much less actively considered the longer a collector continues their searches. It is even worse for a $300 coin because the majority of collectors that spend that much on a coin have probably advanced.

You simply reduce potential buyers with problem coins.

A problem coin should never be purchased for a coin that can commonly be found problem-free, especially for $300. Unless we're talking a 1793 chain cent here, it's best to avoid problem coins. Future buyers of the coin will think so too.

Lots of Barber and Seated coins have been cleaned . Most of them long ago . Yours is NOT harshly cleaned , but I'm afraid I have to agree with AU Details . Could have done better for $300 .

To be fair, 300 dollars isn't too far off the mark for that. I did a quick search on Heritage Auctions for 1900-S Barber halves in AU details, cleaned, and found them generally going for $200-300. Though you could also get a solid problem-free XF for that price, and I think most collectors would prefer that to an AU details piece.

Exactly what I was thinking. Lower grade problem free is better than higher grade with problems.

This coin looks like it was dipped for a few seconds and is imho a market acceptable AU55. As such I think it is worth more than what you paid. I like the look, and so will many buyers. Nice pick up for $300 - I think you did well.

I tend to agree, but would like sharper pics of the surfaces to confirm extent of the cleaning.
