Hello
Going through some very old albums. Found this 1835 Classic Head 1/2 cent and it has either an area of fairly symmetric and focused PMD or it is a clipped planchet. If PMD I would have expected some derangement of the surrounding rim or details. I have included pictures below and wanted to get your thoughts. Thank you.

Looks to be a way smaller arched cut and uneven across. No 180° effects, but that's a lotta wear too, but I'm gonna say clip. Yes they did have them back when. The blank would have been smaller and widened in press.

Thank you for responding crazyb. Seems like a clip with significant wear over time to me as well.

Is it possible that the clip arch radius became less when the blank was struck into a coin, and metal flowed into the vacant space?

There is no evidence of the Blakesly Effect.

@TMB, to me the simplest explanation is PMD (wrong radius and lack of Blakesly Effect). If it was my coin, I would go under than assumption until I could prove that it was a clip. Any chance of you posting another couple pics of the edge of that region? I know that it is wicked hard to get a curved area in focus.

Thank you all for your comments. Yes I will take additional photos and post them this afternoon. This is an interesting discussion on how 100 years of significant wear might Impact correlation with the typical patterns.
Rest in Peace

I'm not seeing this as a clip.

Here are the additional photos that were requested. I am not really sure with this much wear on obverse and reverse as well as the potential for further axial changes at the area in question if we will ever really know. So unless validated or considered more probable as a clip, it will be PMD.

Yes it is possible to have a clipped planchet.

No this isn't one of them.

Agree that the radius is too small. Great pics though!
