Just wondering what people are doing to make sure they get the lowest price.

Always by value for money.

Need to do comparative price research to validate that approach.
For valuable coins, that also includes research into authenticity and provenance, (as well as condition vs price), and if at all possible, examination of coin in hand is imperative, before deciding to buy.

It certainly sharpens up your cherry picking and grading skills !

That way, you will almost always end up a happy buyer, and you will have yourself to thank for that.

I am unable to attend most coin shows so examination in hand is often not an option.
Thus I tend to favor dealers that have good photographs.
For any grade there is a wide variance of strike, tone, die state and eye appeal.
The lowest price may not be the best value.
In the long run, there is no substitute for research.

Your approach is not the right way to go . You don't just look for the lowest price , you look for a nice desirable coin with nice eye appeal at a decent to fair price .
If you stick with only finding the lowest price for the coins you want , you are going to be bombarded with inferior pieces .

Research recent sold values.

What's interesting to me is that there doesn't seem to be any tools to aid in that quest. The closest thing I've found is NGC's price guides but all they are are marketing tools for ebay.

I'm wondering also how to truly gauge the eye appeal online. I've had instances where pictures were worth a thousand words but reality fell short.

ebay has an advanced search tool for sold listings. It's ok, but the pool isn't that big. My "go to" is the Heritage Auction archives. The data base is large and goes back years. I usually use the values for a particular coin sold over the last year or two, and take an average to come up with a fair value.
