I just read the announcement that ebay will transition to in house payment processing over the next few years, essentially leaving PayPal out in the cold (although they apparently will keep PayPal as an option). Any guesses on whether this will be a benefit to ebay sellers by lowering transaction costs?

Every time ebay does something to "benefit our Sellers", those "Sellers" usually end up on the short end of the stick!

ebay doesn't do ANYTHING unless it helps line ebay's pockets! You can take THAT to the bank.
Rest in Peace

It's also not in-house, they are lining up with a payment processor who started in Europe and serves small companies like Uber.

Here is the full text of the notification I received:

Quote:

Dear jdmern,

ebay is happy to announce plans to further improve the customer experience by intermediating payments on our Marketplace platform. In doing so, ebay will manage the payments flow, simplifying the end-to-end experience for both buyers and sellers. We have signed an agreement with Adyen, a leading global payments processor, to become our primary payments processing partner. PayPal, a long-time ebay partner, will be a payments option at checkout for ebay buyers.

You do not need to take any action at this time. The transition to full payments intermediation will be a multi-year journey.

Over the past three years, ebay has transformed its business to drive the best choice, most relevance and most powerful selling platform. Building out our payments capabilities is the next step in that strategy.

Payments intermediation will bring significant benefits for ebay sellers. You can expect a simplified pricing structure, more predictable access to funds, and most sellers can expect their costs of payments processing to be reduced. We're also working on ways to provide sellers a central place to track and manage their business, which can soon include payments information.

By offering buyers more choice in how they pay and expanding payment options into more geographies, ebay believes sellers will be able to reach more buyers and improve conversion.

The transition to full payments intermediation will be a multi-year journey. ebay will begin intermediation on a small scale in North America starting in the second half of 2018, expanding in 2019 under the terms of the Operating Agreement with PayPal. In 2021, we expect to have transitioned a majority of Marketplace customers to the new payments experience.

Again, you do not need to take any action at this time. As ebay gets closer to the initial phase of its intermediation efforts, we will share more details about this process and next steps for sellers. In the meantime, please read the ebay Inc announcement for further information. For any immediate questions or to share feedback, please email (email removed)

We're looking forward to what's next, and to getting there with you.

As always, thank you for selling on ebay.

If it saves me even 1% a year as a payment processor, I would be thrilled with that... While Paypal has pluses in convenience and ubiquity, international fees, poor customer service, and frustrating chargeback processes are certainly big downsides to Paypal
Rest in Peace

1000 words for a 50 word explanation almost always means they are sneaking up behind you.

Almost certainly won't. It's just their way to get that part of the fee too and very likely to make sure that buyer emails are never shared with sellers anymore during the transactions

Interesting. There are many non numismatic ebay sellers who operate their ebay accounts essentially at a loss to acquire emails for marketing

That will probably eventually become a thing of the past. They've become so aggressive about off ebay sales even to the point of absurdity threatening to try and apply fees to things that don't even sell there. With those new policies I fully expect that everything they are planning from here on out will be a way for them to control everything only giving the sellers the information they absolutely need.

That's a great point, and probably even more important to them than the additional transaction fees. With PayPal, once you receive payment, you can contact the buyer outside the ebay system. If transactions are handled internally, they can control and hide that info.

No they can't. Ultimately, I have to send a package to someone. When I do, I enclose a business card and there is nothing ebay can do about it unless they want to turn into a clearinghouse for merchandise. Once the transaction happens ebay and Paypal have gotten their cut, so its about future transactions. I have $2 items on ebay. If someone wants to negotiate around ebay fees, they can just buy one of those and shoot me an email later.

There's always going to be a workaround, but the harder they make it the less people they will have doing it. Putting a business card in the package is one way, but that is also a way that costs money to do it. Their goal is to make it hard/costly so they keep it at a minimum.

When I first started selling on ebay they partnered with Wells Fargo to create an in-house payment system called Billpoint. A separate company called PayPal, however was more widely accepted. So ebay bought PayPal. After a number of years, ebay decided to spin off PayPal as a separate company. As a part of that spin-off, ebay agreed not to become a competitor of PayPal for a number of years.

So, now it seems that number of years is approaching its end, so ebay is going to go back into the payments processing business.

LOVE it! I'm a huge fan of thinking outside of the box. Most especially ebay's ever shrinking box.
