*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***

I have three 1982 D large date with the exact same doubling on the E in WE. The odds of this happening to three different coins coming from the same mint is astronomical. After the first one I found I just thought it was a neat find. After the second one months later I thought it was unusual. After the third I am beginning to think there is something here. Experts, please chime in.

It may very well be John1. I just found it amazing that it's on three different coins in the exact location. I haven't found that on any other dates. Maybe my eyes are just blurry!
Rest in Peace

Not a DDO, the device isn't increased in size, but it doesn't look like a high bounce MD either. If the dies were loose in the housing, say one adjustment screw, then the motion could replicate in the same direction on multiple strikes. But, like I said, not MD. This looks like a partial grease plug. Where instead of filling flat on the bottom of the die device, hung off to the side...or part broke off and no longer plugged that half. Note it is a VLDS, die flow has moved devices to rim, so Grease Fill is likely.

You should include the date, mintmark, and the denomination in your titles.

Why Topic Titles are Important

The title of your topic is very important. Let's say you need help attributing an 1896 Morgan Dollar....

  • Horrendous: Help!

  • Bad: Need help with coin

  • Better: Need help with Morgan Dollar

  • Good: Need help with 1896 Morgan Dollar

  • Awesome: Need help with VAM on 1896 Morgan Dollar

This enables the members with expertise pertaining to your question to easily find and answer your question. The title of the topic also becomes the title of the topic's web page, which enables us to attract more collectors to the site. The more members we have, the more we learn.
