From looking at the D, I'm suspecting MD. I'm sure one of the experts will chime in and give a better response. But I'm saying MD

SF11Dude - I gotta ask. After all the MD's you've shown, don't you think it would be good to learn the difference between MD and DD or DDD?

Read Crazy's excellent article please.

Hey Dude, (isn't that a song...). Let's take a look at the mintmark. Your eye did catch something for sure. Somethin' ain't right. (thank your training, I mean that!). It could be something poking out, but, check other areas that must show equal movement. The edges, 180°, 90°, then the inside, the the serif ends. That's in one motion of my eye when I check these. If no other indicators are there, then it's damage, die, strike or post mint occurance. On to the next.

"go to L"...on checking doubling. What am I seeing and where and direction. Am I seeing a reduction in the devices size. This can be hard at times, on the face for instance, high bounces can mimic close to a DDO, can't see a reduction at first. This goes also for am I seeing increased size of a balloon letter, or just normal here? I'm seeing movement up and to the left slightly on lower bar, look closely at the top, same type motion/direction which also diminishes as it moves to the center. But we missed the first point. The lower bar is 2/3 its normal thickness. Bingo. Can't be a DDO.

Now, final point. Is this MD or Die Deterioration (attrition) DDD? DDD will have other indicators, die flow lines, in most cases the L woulda went to...! By wrapping up the side, at least closer to rim. The device edges at field level will be showing stress, pulling cracks, etc. Here it is clearly EDS, or MDS, the devices are crisp not mushy. Therefore process of elimination = MD.

Note the 'D' mint mark. The SE edge looks like something going on with it, But study for a second and see that they area is pushed inwards in that one area. So I'm thinking this took a hit on that area. The affected area is flat.(all the same color, no contour on that device.

Next image up from that see the light showing on the tail of the 9 and the west side of the 8? So those areas should be dark. Not the contour color light at the top of the device, then dark at the base. But the area below that area is all the same color of yellow that is flat reflecting off of the flat area next to all digits of the date. This is Machine Doubling. the coin was normal with the strike, but the die bumped it after the strike pushing the lowest area of the devices to be pushed to the east. Again all the same color, flat shelf like reducing that side of the digits. Equals Machine Doubling.

First two image on LIBERTY. The top of the 'L' crossbar on LIBERTY looks altered. But note the thickness of the foot of the 'L' is an altered area? It is now smaller because of the die movment on this area of the devices. The devices is altered reducing the device pushing it south. But the left side of that all the LIBERTY devices are pushed east on LIBERTY. So this is All Machine Doubling in two directions SE. All the top devices on LIBERTY are pushed SE.

So the coin was struck normally, then pushed the devices SE on the LIBERTY area. East on the date . The mint mark took a hit somewhere along the way after it was out in circulation. So devices are flat, shelf like, single colored on the affected areas, no longer contoured. So all the traits of Machine Doubling. So we come to a the reason the coin was altered? Machine Doubling.
