How do you identify coins like these? There isn't anything Googleable to go by.
I don't even know where to start (except here).

The lion is Ethiopian.

Here is always a great place to find information! Google can help by searching for specific details on a coin when the language on it is unknown. Numista is a wonderful resource too.
A Krause Catalog of World coins is a great resource as well if you are going to get into World coins. After a bit of time, other languages and designs start to be recognized easily. If not to the specific country, enough to get you on the correct search path.

I really like the Ethiopian coin you posted. Interesting history on those as - they were struck in 3 different places over the years: Phildelphia (1945-1963), Birmingham (1964-1966), and London (1974-1975))

The lion is the Lion of Judah. Ethiopia is Africa's oldest Christian nation, which also claims ancient Jewish roots. The Ark of the Covenant is guarded in a monastery at Lake Tana, according to legend, where it was removed to when the Romans came to Judea.
