Hello all, what would cause a coin to look like this, I come across them once in a while and always struck me as odd

Stained somehow. It did not leave the mint that way. No additional value beyond 1 cent.

@BDG, I agree with @fuzzy and @NS that your coin is stained. Could be soot from a candle or corrosion from soda pop, salt water, or any of a thousand other liquids, but it occurred after this coin left the mint. Safe to spend!
