An important lesson in critical thinking:

"... but Andy refused to believe him because there was no reason for 50 fake coins to be in a ploughed field ..."

The quotes all seem to come from a single press conference; pick your poison:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...hunters.html

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/54569...old-suffolk/ ... "from Nero to Zero"

But "The men said they had finally "got over" their huge disappointment and it had not put them off the hobby.":

Whether there was a reason or not (and it turns out that there was a reason), coins are fake based on what they are shown to be after examination, not on circumstantial evidence.

It is similar to the line:

"these can't be fake-my great grandfather bought them 70 years ago".

Actually it was my great grandfather 90 years ago and the tin can they were in hadn't been opened in 89 years. We kept a pencil and paper sitting beside it with instructions that anyone opening the can had to write down the date it was opened. No one wrote anything down that whole time.

Interestingly enough, nothing seems to be being made about the admission that the show that was filming and had left their props behind was seeding the field with things to be found.
