I found this in pocket change yesterday. I believe it is an error. Any thoughts?

If you need a password, it's coins. And, if you click on the photo, the larger size will come up. I didn't do a good job with Photoshop - it's a nice looking coin in Red/Brown, circulated, of course.

Is the line in the coin raised or incuse? It appears like it is incuse like a scratch and it also moved the metal in the letters. If it were die damage the letters shouldn't be affected at the line so much. It appears like damage to me so far. Coin counter damage is a very good possibility.

It's raised. I hadn't even thought of a coin counter problem.

Sorry, I'm outside working to get ready for my son's high school graduation party next week. Since it is raised it appears more like a circular scratch in the die itself. The plated cents sometimes give strange effects that are because of the plating and not under the plating. But I have a Jefferson nickel with the same effect that I found in circulation several years ago. Lets see what other people give for opinions.

Or coin wrapper damage. Is the copper plating scratched through to expose the zinc? If so then the zinc will start working with the exposed air. Sometimes it rises and later falls Depending of the damage to the plating. I've seen that a lot on mint marks, usually below the mint mark. But it does affect the zinc if scratched through to it.

Yes, it's "coins". Once I figure out how to put images in the cc gallery, it'll be a lot easier to view.

The coin was indeed damaged by a coin counting or rolling machine.

Thanks,
Bill
