Thanks @archeo1982! Here is a Denier of the French Duchy of Normandy. It was issued by Richard I ("The Fearless") during his reign so it dates between 943 and 996 AD. It is attributed as Duplessy 16, but I had a little trouble finding it in Roberts--maybe #4082 or 4801? Functional but elegant letters in my opinion. I especially like the letter M in ROTMAGVS on the rev.

Here is a Styca from the English Kingdom of Northumbria that dates to between 841 and 844 AD. I'm pretty sure that it is my oldest coin from England (not counting Roman or Celtic issues). I have it attributed as Spink #865. It is cross-posted from this prior thread: http://goccf.com/t/258871&whichpage=32#2238215

And here is my last coin for this thread: a Denier from the French City State of Melle (Poitiers mint) that dates to between 840 and 877 AD. It was issued under the reign of Charles "The Bald" and is attributed as Roberts #982.

The early portrait coins still bare a little craftsmanship of the late Roman die-cutters. Love it! Here's a nice example of a portrait denarius from my collection: Depicted: Louis the Pious (AD 814-840) Obv: Laureated head of Louis facing right, barely visible a thin mustache, wearing a toga or mantle with on the shoulder a circular brooch. Legend: HLVDOVVICVS IMP AVG Rev: Medieval trading vessel with one mast, a cross on the top and a double linage to the stern and the bow. Legend: DORESTATVS
