Poll Question
Let's try another one of these. We all know eye appeal is highly subjective, so let's see what you guys think on this one.

The breast is rather more obvious, where the patination has worn thin. In terms of eye appeal, it is a bit dark. I don't have a Seated dollar, so I guess that I would tolerate the darker patination more than most. Nevertheless, I would be fool enough to give it a very quick dip just to lighten it somewhat, but for most collectors, that would be inadvisable. Reasonably desirable coin otherwise.

Typical toning of many Liberty Seated coins. All denominations. My 1875-S 20¢ looks the same. I don't care for toning that dark.

This particular one I am not a fan of the lighter and darker toning.

I don't mind a bit of toning but when it is super dark and grungy then it immediately turns me off. I could have bought a nice Capped Bust quarter PCGS xf40 CAC under bid but I passed cause it was ugly toning....that's probably why it was offered under bid cause it lacked eye appeal and I was surprised by a CAC sticker

I prefer a more even toning, not multicolored like this around the devices.

Should have more options to vote on. For me it is just to dark. Could have a place to vote for nice coin but to dark.

Not a fan of the crusty toning, however, I can see how some would like it.

I feel the same way - nice but too dark for my taste.

I think in order to truly answer this question, you need to understand and study this series and the alternatives available. This coin has clean surfaces, nice rims and a semi cameo effect. The toning looks dark but it's as original as you can get for the series. For SLD this is a nice coin for the grade and I don't think it will have any problems getting a CAC sticker. Now for my pet peeve...Sel_69I, you mentioned that you don't have a Seated dollar. I've read other posts in which you mention dipping coins and mention that you'd give this one a light dip. This is absolutely the wrong course of action for a coin like this in this series. You will likely devalue the coin and it would go from a green bean to none. Many people on here aren't experts and I think your continued discussion about dipping coin's is a deservice to the CCF. I know you're an experienced Numismatist that has been at this for longer than myself but that's a novice move and comment for this particular series.

Thanks for all the great responses. I must admit, I'm a bit puzzled by voting on this one so far.

I like the look, I'd like it even better in a PCGS slab though. The white NGC core really clashes with these types of looks which likely is part of what's getting the mixed responses.

With my first numismatic love being with ancient coins, the cleaning of this class of coins is almost compulsory.
Almost almost all better condition ancient coins recovered from burial have to be cleaned, to be more commercially attractive for sale.
