Hi, I would like to buy a Liberty Seated dollar. I don't have this type of coin and would like any advice you might have. I would like an example in the VG-F range. Scanning the numismedia prices, it seems many of the dates go in the $300 range at those grades. I would probably buy a slabbed example. Any links to online information would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Suggest you contact directly MikeF here at CCF, he may have some nice ones to sell you in that range. Those his game. He just mentioned intentions of selling some at a local show.

There are a lot of ugly Seated dollars out there, be patient and wait for one that you really enjoy. Finding a problem free coin with eye appeal at the right price may take some hunting.

Mid grade dollars are VERY tough to find. Most graded examples are in details holders and problem free examples often go for higher than book values because of their scarcity. Patience will help you in the long run with these. Good luck!

You are not alone. I need a pair for the 7070. I have been taking my time looking for the right ones.

This date is - for some very odd reason not known to numismatics - pretty common and a good deal as a result for a "type" coin like you appear to be looking for. The one you've linked is (in my opinion) carefully graded and worthy at the number, and currently (at $250) around $50-100 below an appropriate retail value that disrespects neither you nor the seller. I believe it'll hammer around $400, perhaps a bit less. Seated dollars are a bit warm in the market, and prices can be a bit inflated.

I couldn't have summed it up better than Super Dave. Always the case with his posts.

It's an 1842 PCGS VG-10. The current price is at $300 which I'd say is retail so it's not a deal at that price. Looking at PCGS CoinFacts for this date, most coins in this range sell around the $290 area, some a bit more, some less. The pics look good but they are using warm lighting and I suspect it's going to look different in hand. SsuperDdave gave some good advice but I think the price, if it does go for $400, is too high for this coin. That's my perspective anyway, I just don't want you to get excited thinking your getting a deal if you can get it for around $400 or a little less because you won't be. I agree though that it is fairly graded as Ssuper indicated.

I will actually keep looking. I am suspicious of the pics as well. I requested additional pics a couple of days ago but haven't received a response. That rim ding on the obverse bugs me as well. Thanks everyone for the advice- great as usual! Cheers!
