This Trade dollar was graded "AU Details - Chopmarked" by NGC. Does the fact that NGC did not mark it as "Cleaned" mean that it hasn't been cleaned? I have seen that PCGS gives grades to Chopmarked Trade dollars. Could I get a numerical grade on it if I sent it to them?

NGC will automatically give the coin a details grade if there is a chopmark.
PCGS will check to see if the chopmark is recognized, and give an appropriate grade. (Details if a bogus chopmark, number grade if a real chopmark)

I personally would grade all coins with chopmarks a details grade. Some may disagree with me, but that's just my opinion. If you don't like the details grade, send to PCGS. But they may consider it details too if the chopmark is not authentic.

I'm no expert on chopmarks, so I'll let someone who has more knowledge give a more detailed answer.

Rest in Peace

. In my opinion a chop mark is simply damage. But there certainly are collectors that specialize in collecting the chop marks.

The chop mark takes precedence for details listings from NGC, so it wouldn't be listed as cleaned, too.

NGC will grade Trade dollars with multiple detail issues including Chopmark-Cleaned. I would not put any weight to a NGC details coin that was not listed as cleaned if the coin looked cleaned. NGC may have found the cleaning for a details coin as market acceptable. In order to get the coin into a PCGS straight grade with chopmark, the coin will have to stand on its own merits.

The coin doesn't appear cleaned to me. If it is a known chopmark, PCGS will straight grade it if they find no other issues with it.

I agree. Chopmarks are interesting and have a place in history, but I wanted a clean example for my 7070.

also JBuck. Since I only plan on owning one single Trade dollar I want a clean one in my type set.

Exactly! If I were building a set, some chopmarked examples might be nice.
