Am I seeing things?
Looks like a horizontal die break on HIS right side in his hair,almost dead even with his mustache. Either that, or after mint damage?

I'm not sure, I Haven't studied them that hard , but I'm sure someone will chime in who has.

Die breaks show up as a ridge on the coin, not a valley.
Lighting appears to come from the top of the coin.

To assure yourself, check with other examples of this coin.

Here is the best picture I could come up with. As I look a little closer, it appears to be indented into the coin as opposed to a raised area.

If it is indented, then the most likely explanation is probably PMD, such as might occur when another coin hit his hair edge-on.
