I am a specialist in the eastern issues of Septimius Severus. O mainly focus on the early issues and as such I don't currently actively collect the later eastern issues of Septimius Severus but like to collect some of the oddities when I see them. I recently bought a mixed lot of 10 denarii just to obtain one coin. This coin. Until I saw it in the lot of denarii I hadn't know that the type existed from Laodicea. This is a common enough type from Rome but this coin is distinctly eastern in style. I started looking and found another on Barry's website from a different pair of dies. I suspect it to be relatively scarce.

Septimius Severus Denarius
Obv:- SEVERVS PIVS AVG, laureate head right
Rev:- PART MAX P M TR P VIIII, two captives seated at foot of trophy
Minted in Laodicea-ad-Mare. A.D. 202
Reference:- RIC IV -; BMCRE -; RSC -.

2.94 gms. 0 degrees. 20.31 mm

Septimius-Severus,-Laodicea

Interesting coin Martin. For those of us who are Roman newbies, could you please share some of your observations as to what makes this design distinctly Eastern in style? Is it the shape of the letters, the subject of the rev, or maybe the pointy-ness of Septimus Servus' beard? Thanks!

Congratulations Martin, the bust does have a different look from what I've seen on the Roman issues. Very nice coin.

Martin I remember that thread and learnt a lot ...I think I can still recall the differences between LadM and Rome..

Slightly smaller portrait
The eyebrow tends to be a small crescent curve from the bridge of the nose to the back of the eye.
Beard.. pointy curls tend to be tighter, thinner and curve slightly upwards.

Nice find

Paul
