Can We Post A Complete Commemorative Collection?

Iowa is a very business like coin and one that is easy to get in higher grades, all the way up to 67. 68 is a little tougher, but it is obtainable if you have patience.

This is a much tougher coin to grade than might be expected simply because of the high points of both the obverse and reverse having a fair amount of detail at the centers.

As it true with many of the CSC, this one is available in matte finish which has a "frosty" look that doesn't dull the luster, but does offer a very slight cameo appearance.

The matte finish is more common than is the fully lustrous examples. Having a bright cart wheel luster on an Iowa is a hard one to find. Since the dies were polished many times that polishing did reduce the "white blaze" sometimes associated with a proof-like look. Iowa does not have any designated proof like issues and 99% of the people buying this issue just go by grade alone.

Finding an early strike that still exhibits bright luster is a challenge worth waiting for. I'm not sure how well my photos will show that difference.

Beefer - a toned Iowa is a real challenge and you found a gorgeous example. It's actually rare to find an Iowa with any toning, and when it is seen, it's usually quite blotchy and unattractive. Yours serves as a good example of a great toner for this issue.

The 1946 Iowa half dollar has always been an intriguing example to me in circulated state ... not sure how to reconcile the later date mintage with the relative availability of honestly circulated examples.

However they came to be ... the circulated Iowa half is somewhat available in the marketplace ... and a dedicated collector should be able to view a few examples every year.

Mine is the PCGS Pop 1/2 coin ... with the current PCGS lowball at AG03.

I had never seen one of the "reserved" 500 coins/holders before. I wonder if they still have the other reserved coins that were planned for a 2046 release?

Correct to the best of my knowledge ... the 1946 Iowa half remains the final (only) classic silver commemorative half to complete it's original distribution.

Salute to Worn Out for showing both of his collection examples in those holders ... it was not stated (that I see) when issued ... assume the 1996 date agreed to.

Thanks coinfrog, moxking,and Beefer! I was looking for one that had some toning and this one came up on ebay. Most are bright white which is nice when not baggy, but toned is my style! I forgot to post the reverse....
