Personally, a B&L 10X is good enough for me - anything that this won't catch probably isn't worth owning from my point of view.

If you have good eyesight(I don't) use a 10x. I use a 14x. Don't go higher than 14x because the image gets distorted. As to brand,B&L is good but cost a bit more. I have used a $4 doublet and it works fine. I have a 14x B&L Hastings triplet and it works fine but the area is small to view. I also have a 14x doublet ANCO brand,I think that's the brand and it cost $8. I use that most of the time. So I recommend a 10x and a 14x Hastings Triplet. I use a swing arm lamp with a 30 watt CFL bulb.

Lighting is as important as the type of magnification. I'm happy with a 10X.
