Currently I just buy boxes of nickels. I found that dimes were not productive, and quarters are fruitless.
Are halves worth doing as boxes?
How much is a box of halves?

I've quit searching both dimes and quarters. It's so rare to find anything.
I've always had much better luck with halves.

I would say "yes" to answer your question on Halves. It does take persistence, though. Droughts where you go a few boxes without finding any silver are common.
I agree with you about Quarters. As for Dimes, it's not completely fruitless. CWRs sometimes can provide bonanzas in terms of silver. Boxes, normally only 1 or 2 per, on average. Also, the 2009 Dimes are quite challenging to find.

It depends where you live in terms of hunters, as compared to 10-15 years ago, my success rate had notably dropped to the point that I rarely bother since I have other interests that I'd like. But with more interesting non-silver coins including the highest concentration of proofs of any denomination, NIFCs, No FGs, and DDO's, it's still a viable option to search for and remains popular. I'd honestly search small dollar rolls over quarters though since you have a better chance of finding proofs, NIFCs, wounded eagles, or 1979 Wide Rims that can bring in a little money. Quarters meanwhile have very few notable varieties and the worst odds of any denomination.

Jon, how many dimes did you search before giving up?

I always had good luck with dimes, although the key is volume. As in $100k+ searched over five years.
I found the same amount of silver searching halves, but I consider halves humdrum as finds were mostly watered down 40%, blah, no thanks.

Quote: Q: How much is a box of halves? A: $500 This always baffles me. I've got two banks and one credit union, and all of them charge an additional fee for boxes of halfs and/or dollars. It's been years since I checked, but I believe my cost would have been $520-$550/box. I'm VERY curious on where (and how) all these other guys get there boxes at face value. ? PS: Technically none of my banks are supposed to 'sell' me boxes of change, but my one bank does let me order penny-quarter boxes at face because the 'chief' at the one bank gives them to me because she knows I'm disabled

@atticguy, I'm going to be blunt. If your CU or bank is charging to buy boxes, just dump 'em. Find a bank that's free. It's really that simple.

With dimes, volume definitely helps... but I also think it is much better to buy $50 each from 5 different banks than a box from one bank... when you spread it out, you can find where the best finds are more easily and then re-hit those banks/tellers to maximize your finds. I did this the other day - $50 from 8 different banks. One batch of $50 in CWR produced 2 silvers... a batch of $50 in CWR from a different bank brought a silver and $20 in CWR from that same branch brought two Buffalos... so you know which two branches I'll be hitting again tomorrow.
