I am brand-spanking new to opening rolls of pennies from the bank. In fact, I bought my first box of circulated pennies about 6 hours ago.

I ended up finding 10 wheat pennies, 2 Canadian cents, and 3 2009's. The rest I plan on returning to the bank to buy more.

Should I be hunting for anything else? Wheat pennies are the big ones I was looking for, but are there any other dates, mints, etc I should be keeping my eye out for?

If someone who has been opening penny rolls for a while could give me the basics, I would really appreciate it!

MrRabbit!

I would suggest downloading Volumes 1 & 2 of Crazyb0's Coin IDing for Dummies here:

http://goccf.com/t/296596

The end of Volume 2 has a list of things to look for when searching Lincoln cents, as well as Jefferson nickels.

There are many, many other things to look for, but it takes a bit of knowledge of what exactly you're looking for. Those PDFs will help.

Thanks Spruett001! Was getting set to use my "finger", ahh, why not, do it anyway!

to the funnyfarm MrWabbit, shhhhhh! We hunt wabbits...

This one's for you!

Besides the wheats, there's the error coins, big and small. Mint errors like Cuds, broad strikes, off center strikes. Then doubled dies of all sorts, and Repunched mintmarks(my favorites). Some folks like the die cracks and teeny, tiny micro errors. So there's lots of things to look for. Read these booklets, its easy reading, gets your feet wet. Then go where you find an interest. Happy hunting!

Yeah, finding errors may take me hours sorting through each penny haha, but I will definitely take a look at the guides. I ordered a magnifier so I can see 'em close up.
