Looks homemade to me. Legit Half Dollar, legit scrap. Combine the two. Profit.

Multiple separate items have been combined for display purposes- a normally struck proof coin is surrounded by scrap webbing from the stock metal sheet after the blanks were punched out. The coin and four pieces of scrap webbing are otherwise unrelated and those four pieces are not physically attached to the coin itself.

Yes, looking closer I see that the scrap is indeed four separate pieces apparently laid around the half dollar.

I did as well. I suspected it was a fake error, but wasn't 100% sure. Now I know.

The coin itself has reeded edges. Looks pretty obvious to me, not an error.

Does anyone know the diameter of a half dollar type one planchet? It seems to me that there should be a bit more room between the coin and the cut outs. Maybe not. Maybe the upsetting mill only reduces the planchet diameter by a mm or less.
